Endodontics is the specialist branch of dentistry that deals with diseases of the tooth foundation including the tooth root, dental pulp (nerve) and surrounding tissue.
What does an Endodontist do?
Endodontists are Dentists who have undertaken specialist training to manage complicated treatment involving the tooth foundation. Endodontists specialise in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of tooth pulp or the interior tissues of the teeth. While General Dentists are trained in endodontic procedures, your Dentist may refer you to an Endodontist for more specialised care.
Why would I need an Endodontist?
Teeth are composed of a hard outer structure composed of enamel and dentine surrounding a soft, living tissue called the pulp. More commonly referred to as the “nerve” of the tooth, the pulp can become diseased or injured and has limited capability to repair itself, this is where Endodontists can help.
Dental decay, trauma, breakdown of a filling or crown, extreme wear, a crack or chip in the tooth, or gum disease can all lead to damage or infection of the tooth pulp. Such infection can be either acute or chronic and can be painful. The most common procedure to treat pulp infections or disease is root canal treatment, which involves the removal of the diseased pulp tissue.
Root canal treatment
Root canal treatment is a multi-stage procedure and can provide enormous relief to patients who are experiencing pain due to an infection within their tooth. When a tooth has an infected pulp, root canal treatment is required to save the tooth and avoid it being removed. For more information about root canal treatment click here.
The cost of Endodontics
The extent and cost of endodontic treatment is determined by each patient’s individual situation. If you require endodontic treatment, you will receive a detailed treatment plan and an estimate of fees prior to any treatment commencing.
Booking an appointment to see an Endodontist
Patients do not require a referral from their Dentist to see an Endodontist.
