What will happen at my first dentist visit?

Prior to your first appointment, the Pacific Smiles Dental team will request that you complete a Medical History Questionnaire. This will assist your Dentist understand your medical history prior to commencing any dental treatment. You can download a Medical History Questionnaire here, complete it at home and bring it along to your first appointment or you will be requested to arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment to complete the questionnaire at reception.

When your Dentist is ready, your Dental Assistant will call your name and lead you from the waiting room through to the dental surgery. The Dentist and Dental Assistant will introduce themselves and ask if you have any specific concerns or issues with your teeth, gums or appearance of your smile.

With the help of the Dental Assistant, your Dentist will then assess the current condition of your teeth and gums.

The Dentist may request that digital dental x-rays be taken of your teeth and gums during your check-up. A dental x-ray is the only accurate way that the dentist can ‘see’ between the teeth and under fillings.

Types of x-rays you might need

There are three types of x-rays that your Dentist may suggest:

  • Small Dental X-Ray – for individual teeth
  • OPG – a full mouth x-ray
  • 3D Cone Beam X-Ray – shows the very fine detail of all structures of the jaw in the three-dimensional view

Your Dentist may also offer you a scale and clean to remove tartar build-ups. A professionally applied fluoride application may also be offered to assist in the reduction of dental decay and decrease the sensitivity of your teeth.

At the end of your check-up, your Dentist will discuss the condition of your teeth and gums and outline any suggested treatment options with you. They will provide you with all the information required for you to make a decision if treatment is required. Prior to any future appointments or commencement of work, your Dentist will provide you with a personalised treatment plan outlining treatment options, necessary appointments and fees.

At the conclusion of your appointment, your Dental Assistant will lead you back to reception for payment, health fund claiming and booking of additional appointments.

If you do not need to make additional appointments for treatment, you can either make an appointment for your next six monthly check-up at this time or wait until you receive an appointment reminder.
