Do my kids need regular check-ups?

With regular dental check-ups, you can set up good oral health habits for your children for life. Regular visits can help identify early signs of tooth decay and even help to prevent it. Child dental decay is on the rise in Australia, with recent studies showing that 50% of Australian children under six suffer from dental decay¹. In children, this can result in pain, removal of teeth, bad breath and overall general health problems, so it is important to make sure your children’s teeth are taken care of.
 

What can I do prevent dental decay in my kids?

1. Healthy Eating – Cavity-causing foods are those with high sugar content.
2. Healthy Drinking – Children should drink plenty of plain tap water and limit the consumption of high sugar drinks.
3. Brush Twice a Day – It is important for kids to clean their teeth at least twice a day.
4. Floss Daily – Children should floss between their teeth every day to remove food and plaque from the spaces between teeth.
5. Visit Your Dentist Regularly – It is recommended that from age three, children visit the dentist every six months for a thorough check-up.
6. Wear a Mouth Guard For Sport – It is important to play safe in all sports by protecting children’s teeth with a custom-made, professionally fitted mouth guard. Mouth guards should always be worn when training and playing sport to minimise the risk of dental injury.

If you have private health insurance for your family, your child’s check-up may be covered in your policy. Be sure to check your level of cover with your health fund before your appointment to know what you are covered for.
