A denture is a removable prosthetic device that replaces missing teeth and surrounding tissue, and yes, it is the same thing that your Nana called ‘false teeth’, except they are a modern version. Dentures are made from acrylic resin or porcelain and restore chewing function, speech, and a confident smile for those who have lost teeth.
Full dentures are for when you’ve lost all your teeth in either your upper jaw, lower jaw, or both. They’re a complete set that replaces every tooth and sits directly on your gums. Think of it as a full mouth makeover.
Partial dentures are for when you still have some of your natural teeth left. They fill in the gaps where teeth are missing and complete your smile. Partials usually have clasps or other attachments that hook onto your remaining healthy teeth, restoring your full ability to eat and talk naturally and prevent your other teeth from changing position.
As we age, the tissue and underlying bone in the mouth continually change, so over the journey your dentures will eventually require adjustments, relining, or replacement to ensure they continue to fit comfortably and properly.
The average life of a denture is about five to seven years. Your denture experts at Penrith’s Pacific Smile Dental will advise when this is necessary.
You might find your speech sounds a bit different when you first wear your new dentures – that’s totally normal! Your mouth just needs time to get used to the new shape and feel of your ‘new teeth’. Your tongue, lips, and cheeks will adjust pretty quickly. Most people find they’re speaking naturally again within a few weeks.
Depending on your favourite foods, the early days of wearing dentures could mean a completely different spread of foods. The reality is that whole apples, porterhouse steak, hard nuts and raw vegetables will be off the menu because they will be too hard to chew.
New dentures call for a soft foods approach, your food friends will be scrambled eggs, smashed avocado, pasta, soup, slow-cooked stews, mashed potatoes and well-cooked vegetables. The previous are all good choices for lunch and dinner. Your breakfast list might include porridge, stewed fruit, yoghurt or poached eggs and baked tomatoes. With dentures it can take up to a year to introduce more difficult foods to chew into your diet.
Pacific Smiles Dental in Penrith recommends taking your dentures out at night so that your gums and jaw have a chance to rest and repair. Interesting to note that when your dentures are removed, your mouth is exposed to the beneficial antibacterial agents that are found in your saliva.
However, in the first week we recommend you wear your dentures at night, this is to assist your mouth, gums and jaw to adapt.
Believe it or not, this is one of the most asked questions about dentures. First off, we always recommend sugarless gum, and you also might want to try a few to find your favourite. Chewing gum helps produce saliva and the special properties of your saliva is beneficial for wearers of dentures.
Both your natural teeth and your dentures need to be cleaned regularly. We advise rinsing and brushing after every meal. Using a denture soft-brush and solution (or water) gently brush your dentures using the techniques shown to you by your Pacific Smiles dentist or dental hygienist.
After cleaning, set your denture down on a hand towel and let them dry overnight. Unlike what you see in the movies and on tv, there is no need to put them in a glass of water on your bedside table.
