Breaking a tooth is one of those things that happens without warning. One moment you’re eating, playing sport, or going about your day, and the next you’re running your tongue over a sharp edge where a full tooth used to be.
It can be really upsetting and unsettling, and most people’s first instinct is to panic slightly, and the second is to think whether they need to see an Indooroopilly dentist urgently.
The short answer is yes you should. But there are also a few things you can do in the minutes and hours before you get here that will make a real difference to your outcome.
If you’re in pain right now and need to see someone today, call us at Pacific Smiles Dental Indooroopilly on (07) 2150 4292 or book online. We do our best to see emergency patients the same day.
You could take the wait and see approach, especially if the tooth isn’t causing any pain. The thing is that a broken tooth isn’t just a cosmetic problem. Depending on how much of the tooth has broken off and where the break sits, you could be looking at nerve exposure, infection risk, or damage that gets harder to repair the longer it’s left.
Even a small chip on a front tooth can have a sharp edge that cuts the tongue or cheek. A more serious break can expose the sensitive inner layers of the tooth, leading to pain that worsens over the next few hours or that night when you are trying to sleep.
Getting a cracked or broken tooth looked at quickly gives us the best chance of saving the tooth and keeping the overall treatment simple.
Don’t leave it until tomorrow if you can help it. Even if the pain is manageable right now, the risk of infection or further damage is real.
We keep appointments available for emergency patients at our Indooroopilly practice and will do our best to see you the same day, we are open seven days a week.
Most broken teeth need attention within 24 hours, but some situations require you to act even faster. Come in or call us immediately if you notice any of the following:
These are signs that something more serious may be happening, and they need prompt assessment.
When you come in, the first thing we do is take an X-ray to understand exactly how the tooth has broken and what’s happening at the root level. From there, treatment depends on the extent of the damage.
For a minor chip or crack, bonding or a small filling is often all that’s needed. It’s quick, and you’ll leave with the tooth looking and feeling normal.
For a more significant fracture where the inner part of the tooth is exposed, we may need to place a crown to protect and rebuild the tooth. If the nerve is involved, root canal treatment may be required before the crown goes on.
In cases where the tooth is too damaged to save, extraction is sometimes the only option, and we’ll talk you through what comes next for that gap, whether that’s a dental implant, a bridge, or another solution that suits you.
Whatever the situation, we’ll explain what we’re seeing and what we recommend before we do anything. We will explain everything so there are no surprises.
The good news is, no matter how bad you think the break is, there is usually a way to treat of fix it.
Our practice is located within Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, which means easy access and easy parking whether you’re coming from Toowong, Taringa, St Lucia, Kenmore, Chapel Hill, or anywhere else in the western suburbs.
When you’re already stressed about a dental emergency, the last thing you need is trouble finding the place or scrambling for parking.
For many of our patients from Taringa and St Lucia especially, we’re genuinely the closest emergency dental option available, and being inside the Indro shopping centre means you can also pick up anything you need from a pharmacy while you’re here.
We’re here, we’re local, and we’ll look after you.
